If you’re not otherwise occupied Saturday night, you can head over to Elon University for a screening of a documentary called “Before The Music Dies” — by most accounts, a polemic on the sad state of contemporary music because Ashlee Simpson fans don’t know who Bob Dylan is. While cretinous mainstream tastes make for an admittedly easy target, the filmmakers have assembled quite a roster of musicians to testify on their behalf, including Dave Matthews and Durham jazzman Branford Marsalis. Reviews of the film have been mostly (but not unanimously) positive. Showtime is 8 p.m. Saturday at The Zone on the Elon campus; admission is free.
